Health benefits of beets

        • Beets are very low in calories (provide only 45 kcal/100 g), and contain zero cholesterol and small amount of fat. Its nutrition benefits come particularly from fiber, vitamins, minerals, and unique plant derived anti-oxidants.
        • The root is rich source of phytochemical compound, glycine betaine. Betaine has the property of lowering homocysteine levels within the blood.Homocysteine, one of highly toxic metabolite, promotes platelet clot as well as atherosclerotic-plaque formation, which, otherwise, can be harmful to blood vessels. High levels of homocysteine in the blood result in the development of coronary heart disease (CHD), stroke and peripheral vascular diseases.
        • Beets are an excellent source of folates. It contains about 109 µg/100 g of this vitamin (Provides 27% of RDA). Folates are necessary for DNA synthesis within the cells.
        • Fresh Beets contain vitamin-C. Vitamin C is one of the powerful natural antioxidants, which helps the human body scavenge deleterious free radicals one of the reasons for cancer development.
        • Beets are an excellent source of carotenoids, flavonoid anti-oxidants, and vitamin A. Vitamin A is required maintaining healthy mucus membranes and skin and is essential for vision. Consumption of natural vegetables rich in flavonoids helps to protect from lung and oral cavity cancers.
        • The root is also rich source of B-complex vitamins such as niacin (B-3), pantothenic acid (B-5), pyridoxine (B-6) and minerals such as iron, manganese, copper, and magnesium.
        • Further, the root is composed of moderate levels of potassium. 100 g fresh root hold 325 mg or 7% of daily requirements. Potassium lowers heart rate and regulates metabolism inside the cells by countering detrimental effects of sodium.
        • If you have a health condition that ends in the suffix, "ITIS," it means you have an inflammatory condition. There are certain foods you should avoid because they contain solanines, a glycoalkaloid poison naturally occurring in night shade plants causing gastrointestinal problems, neurological disturbances and exacerbating inflammatory conditions. One of the most widely eaten night shade vegetables are Tomatoes, and they are found in many food products, most commonly in the form of Tomato Ketchup.
        • Beets are anti-inflammatory, high in vitamins A, B and C, rich in Potassium, Iron, Folate and Manganese. Beets lower blood pressure and promote healthy circulation and cardiovascular health while also lowering homocysteine.

      Perfect For Your Holiday Table!!!!

Tangy and Sweet with just the right blend of spices.  The Perfect Holiday Condiment

Cranberries are one of the top antioxidant-rich foods, packing in more antioxidants ounce-for-ounce than other "superfoods" like spinach, blueberries, or even green tea.

In addition to having more phytonutrients than other familiar berries, cranberries are also even lower in calories and sugar, with a mere 46 calories, 12 grams of carb, and 2 grams of sugar per cup.

Here are six reasons to incorporate cranberries year-round, plus six easy ways to get more in your diet.

Inflammation. Cranberries have been shown to have an anti-inflammatory effect, which can potentially benefit conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, stomach and digestive disorders, and our cardiovascular system, particularly the lining of our vessel walls.

Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs). Cranberries have been used for years to prevent UTIs. It appears that their high levels of antioxidants called proanthocyanidins help reduce the adhesion of certain bacteria to urinary tract walls, which in turn can help to reduce the incidence of UTIs.

Ulcers. Certain types of stomach ulcers are related to a particular type of bacteria called Helicobacter pylori, and it's possible that cranberries may help prevent this bacteria from attaching to the lining of the stomach, similar to how they can help prevent bacteria from attaching to the lining of the urinary tract.

Dental health. The same phytonutrients in cranberries that help prevent UTIs may also benefit our dental health, by preventing bacteria from sticking to our teeth. An added bonus: The anti-inflammatory effects of these phytonutrients can also help to reduce inflammation in and around our gums, which helps to reduce our risk of periodontal disease.

Cardiovascular Disease. Cranberry's benefit on cardiovascular health is likely due to a combination of factors, including cranberry's antioxidant effects, anti-inflammatory effects, and potential improvement of HDL and LDL cholesterol. The polyphenols may help prevent the build-up of plaque on vessel walls, and the antioxidant components of cranberries are also linked to a reduction in blood pressure.

Protect against cancer. Researchers continue to identify more and more ways that cranberries are beneficial in slowing tumor growth, and have shown positive effects against certain types of cancer, including prostate, lung, breast, and colon cancer.

Cranberries are one of the top heart-healthy foods. Not only are cranberries low in calories (25 calories per half cup), they're loaded with antioxidants, fiber, vitamin C, and vitamin E. Plus, research has shown that the polyphenols in fruits like cranberries may help to prevent LDL oxidation, reduce blood pressure, and inhibit platelet oxidation. Cranberries have a high level of potassium and are low in sodium.  They help to support normal kidney, bladder, and urinary tract functions.
