Evening Primrose Oil For Acne and Cystic Acne
Perhaps one of the most popular uses of evening primrose is as an acne treatment. The supplement contains both gamma linolenic acid (GLA) as well as linolenic acid. Both of these omega 6 fatty acids are important for absorbing insulin, the structure of our cells, regulating hormones, increasing skin elasticity, improving the function of nerves and regulating both mood and the working of the heart. Many people take evening primrose oil simply to help their skin, even if they’re not suffering from issues like acne. But it’s believed the many benefits it has for the skin are also important in making it so effective as a treatment for acne. Between lessening inflammation, providing better elasticity to the skin and simply being a great source of fatty acids, there are a lot of reasons for why evening primrose oil may be the acne treatment you need. Most people do see any different in their acne from taking evening primrose oil treatments until at least four weeks. However, this will depend on a lot on the type and severity of acne you have. Although many people may use evening primrose oil for hormonal acne, it can also be used for what’s known as cystic acne too. This especially troublesome form of acne gets its name from the cyst-like growths it produces on the body (usually the fact). These boil-like growths can form just about anywhere where sweat is able to collect and affects skin tissue deeper down than with common acne.
The aforementioned components of the supplement also make evening primrose oil a cystic acne treatment too. Basically, it helps the skin stronger and able to defend and retaliate from attacks. It’s interesting that in cultures that have traditionally high amounts of Omega 6 fatty acids (like the kind in evening primrose oil), acne is rarely an issue. These omega 6 components also help regulate the body’s oil production. By keeping it regulated, unnecessary amounts aren’t created that can eventually become the problem behind cystic acne.Combine evening primrose oil with fish oil and/or zinc for best results when fighting cystic acne. But again, speak with a doctor first.

What Evening Primrose Oil is; why it works
It took modern research to unveil the therapeutic power contained within the seed oil: an essential fatty acid (EFA) called gamma-linolenic acid (GLA). Once processed in the body, GLA, an omega-6 fatty acid, exerts incredible anti-inflammatory and healing actions.
Evening primrose oil is certainly not the only source of GLA; various foods actually contain small amounts of it and the body produces GLA on its own from a number of dietary fats. But evening primrose oil offers an unusually concentrated source, with 7% to 10% of its fatty acids available in the form of GLA. Interestingly, borage oil features even more GLA (20% to 26%), and black currant oil offers rich stores as well (14% to 19%), but their effectiveness and safety for many ailments has not been as intensively examined as evening primrose oil. Nonetheless, some people prefer borage and black currant oils because they require a lower dose (at less total cost) for the same amount of GLA.
The remarkably rich stores of GLA in evening primrose oil are what make it so valuable in healing. Taken internally, the body converts GLA into prostaglandins. These hormone like compounds help regulate various body functions, controlling inflammation in some cases and promoting it in others. The prostaglandins produced from GLA fall into the anti-inflammatory category.
Specifically, evening primrose oil may help to:
Evening Primrose Oil relieves the discomforts of Endometriosis, PMS (premenstrual syndrome), menstruation, and fibrocystic breasts
By interfering with the production of inflammatory prostaglandins released during menstruation, the GLA in evening primrose oil can greatly lessen menstrual cramps. It also minimizes premenstrual breast tenderness, irritable bowel flare-ups, and carbohydrate cravings, and helps to control endometriosis-associated inflammation.
Many PMS sufferers are found to have unusually low levels of GLA in their systems, which is why supplements will help so much. Although the oil has not been widely used in this country for treating Endometriosis, PMS, Fibrocystic Breasts Europeans have long used it for these condition. In women with fibrocystic breasts, the oil's essential fatty acids can greatly minimize breast inflammation and promote the absorption of iodine, a mineral that can be present in abnormally low levels in women with this condition.
Evening Primrose Oil eases the joint pain and swelling of rheumatoid arthritis because of its strong anti-inflammatory nature
Supplementation with evening primrose oil and other sources of GLA has been shown to greatly reduce joint pain and swelling and promote healing and recovery of this crippling disease.
Evening Primrose Oil treats memory deficiencies
By boosting the transmission of nerve impulses, evening primrose oil may be valuable in treating this progressive brain disorder.
Evening Primrose Oil protect against the effects of aging
As the body ages, it loses its ability to convert dietary fats into GLA. Because this essential fatty acid is involved in so many body processes, taking evening primrose oil can help to compensate for any deficiencies in GLA.
Evening primrose oil may be one of the most essential supplements in a womens diet as she ages.
